Michael Cheney Talks Traffic - Interview With A Traffic Expert

Michael Cheney, one of the most-respected names in Internet marketing, has been online since 1995 and is the man behind the 6-Figure launches of AdSense Videos and 11 Days To List Profits. Q. Firstly Michael, thank you for joining us today in your busy schedule.


A. Hey no problem. Good to be here.


Q. We all know that traffic is important but could you just explain a bit about traffic for the beginners out there?


A. Sure. Traffic is the lifeblood of any business online. Without it you just die. We all know that. But what a lot of us don't realize is that just like everything else on the Internet traffic changes very quickly. That is, the methods of getting traffic are changing all the time and that's where people get caught out.


Q. What do you mean by "caught out"?


A. Well people fall into the trap of thinking that just because they know one or two traffic generation methods that they are some sort of traffic master. In reality just because you know how to start a pay per click campaign or a little bit about search engines doesn't make you anywhere near a traffic expert. I'm trying to spread the word that there is a massive array of traffic tactics that most people aren't even aware of, let alone using or mastering.


Q. Can you give us some examples?


A. Sure. Offline for example. You might immediately think that getting traffic is a purely online activity but the truth of the matter is that there are lots of things you can be doing offline to get people into your website. And it's usually these sorts of areas that are being under-utilized and therefore there is less competition for that traffic as well.


Q. So by offline you mean advertising offline?


A. Not necessarily. That is one method, yes, but I'm thinking of more creative ways to get people into your website. It all comes down to the fact that having asked people on my list it came as no surprise that most people want to know about free rather than paid traffic sources. I've had to become an expert in free ways of getting traffic in my time online.


Q. What do you mean - I thought you were running a successful online business with lots of cash flow?


A. I am. But it's not always been this way. When I first started out in 1995 I had nothing. No money to play with. Just my own initiative and imagination.


Q. So are you saying you're against paying for traffic online?


A. No. No I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is that, especially when you first start out, you always want to focus on the free methods. You get the traffic in for free, make some sales and then you can reinvest some of that money into paid methods of getting traffic. This speeds up the process.


Q. So what particular offline methods are you referring to - can you give us some examples?


A. There's one tactic I used that costs nothing to implement, is relatively quick and ended up getting me thousands and thousands of targeted visitors into my websites. When I've shared this tactic with other marketers at seminars they've started laughing and slapping their foreheads when they saw how easy it was. They were also embarrassed that they had failed to use this tactic. It was quite amusing.


Q. So are you going to tell us what this method is?


A. No! (laughs) It's in my course! I truly believe in rewarding those people that are most eager to learn so instead of giving away all my traffic tactics in interviews like this I've put some of them in an E-Book I've written. It is free though if people want to get it.


Q. So how can people get hold of it?

Q. What's in it?

Is Google in Trouble & Facing Bankruptcy?

[NEW YORK - Wednesday] - by Devon Melk.

Rumors are now running amok that the 2nd most powerful website on the entire Worldwide-Web may file BANKRUPTCY, with the deadline set for this December;
being the date of both discharge and dissolution in a Federal Court of Law.

This would come as a SHOCK to investors and "Googlers" alike who
both profit and benefit from the use of the World's largest and
most powerful search engine which receives far in excess of
100 MILLION unique daily visitors and well over 300 million
individual searches daily - making it perhaps the single most
valuable public data resource as an "information bank" online the
world over.

But is the rumor true or false?

The origin of the rumor occurred when some savvy Internet marketers
began making statements that they had heard "insiders' talk" that
the company (now publicly traded since April 30, 2004, just over 3
years ago) may face financial disaster with the release of a "new
system" that would allow advertisers to get their otherwise
pay-per-click (PPC) advertising completely free.

This, of course, would naturally lead directly (like a domino-
effect) to the collapse of Google's sibling program AdSense; as its
only revenue comes from the direct sales of AdWords "clicks."

The "new system" in question and responsible for the controversy
over getting AdWords pay-per-clicks free is that developed by
Dr Jon Cohen of New York City, New York (now retired) who discovered
a simple, yet effective means, for getting Google PPC ads without
having to suffer the costs involved.

The retired New York doctor and native has a publicly disclosed net
worth now in excess of $70 million [US], having generated well over
$377 million in product sales from sixteen (16) separate online
businesses within just nine (9) years since first venturing online
in 1998 (about the same time as Google was founded).

It is estimated by company insiders and leading financial analysts
that the "good doctor" (as he's called by "all who know him") has
purportedly saved well over $93 million (some estimates suggest
closer to $136 million) in otherwise paid advertising at Google and
the other major players in the PPC targeted-search arena online -
including Yahoo, MSN, AskJeeves, AllTheWeb.com, HotBot, AltaVista,
Lycos and Netscape, just to name a few.

The "secret" became available to the general masses last April, and
its very release caused such a major sweeping stir among the
community of Internet-marketers, affiliate-marketers, webmasters,
ecommerce company owners and surfers alike that the site quickly
rose to break the top most visited 1,000 websites on the entire
planet briefly; and as can be seen here:

When asked if the "secret" would somehow ruin Google, Dr Cohen
revealed almost cryptically that it actually would bring about just
the opposite effect, and "stimulate" even more business volume for
the virtual giant.

Many people were dismayed to find that Google itself is deliberately
allowing the purchase of 100,000's of PPC ads offering the secret
system to the general public -- which indicates to most observers
that either they [Google] haven't caught it, or they simply feel
that it somehow is not a threat to their continued operation.

For anyone's inspection factual and hard evidence supporting this
can be seen by simply looking to the right-hand column when doing a
search for "get google ads free" (specifically in quotation marks)
at Google.com under the "Sponsored Links" section.

You can also see nearly 100,000 specific results in the "organic"
fields index located in the center and which occupies the bulk of
the results pages.

One would think that if Google felt threatened by such a release as
this earth-shaking "secret" is, they would hardly allow for either
paid-ads or organic content to make the top searches regarding it.

However, evidence supports to the contrary - and this being the
case now for a full six (6) months.

Mysteriously, within just two (2) hours of its initial release last
April, Google itself actually did in fact 'pause' the parent firm's
attempts at advertising the new system using PPCs on their search
engine - only, however, to release the hold after a Review Team
consisting of some of Google's top executives completed performing
an in-depth investigation and made the determination to ALLOW the
ads to run.

The secret system was recently revised however to include "major
new content" and "more exhaustive instructions," and is now
available at its Home Site:

The most important addition is that of a so-called "string of code"
(tech-talk for some HTML) that can be added to any webpage(s) that
instantly causes the elimination of the page owner's AdWords costs
right away.

Even a "live" woman spokes-representative ("Rachel") has been added
to the site, and who appears to literally walk out onto the webpage
and talk to visitors and explain a bit more how the mysterious new
breakthrough system works.

Since the addition of this new "live" spokes-woman has now appeared
at the site, company Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Mr Todd
Coutrin states that "sales for the system have skyrocketed above
2,430% suddenly and with no limit in sight."

Coutrin continues: "With the newest revision now in place, plus all
the additions added, affiliates for the new system can expect to
earn even more than ever before!" (Note: Affiliates make up the
bulk of the firm's sales generation.)

The refund rate for the new revised version of the secret (named
V5.1) has dropped to less than half of what it was before the newer
version's release; meaning it's now even more readily-received and
put to use than ever before (perhaps in large part to the newer
simplicity of application) - now making it the safest and one of
the best resellers for the networks of affiliate marketers who earn
their revenues from the reselling of other electronic publishers'
stock and digital product lines.

When asked, Google company representatives stated matter-of-factly
that the rumors of bankruptcy for the ecommerce giant are simply
not true, and that the rumor millings are in fact simply the result
of "panics" brought on by the usual hysteria associated with
anything large, new or revolutionary - or in this case, all three.

Attempts to contact both Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the former
Stanford University students who founded Google in 1998, to request
comment were unsuccessful.

Again, Google itself seems to be the biggest supporter of the "new
system" as it's allowing more and more advertisers to promote the
new system on its search engine before over 100 million daily
searches and surfers.

How to Rank High on Google

To rank high on Google, your website has to be measured by “500 million variables and 2 billion terms” of Google’s equation, as stated on Google’s Corporate Information Technology Overview page. Google’s ranking system is based on a democracy, and the citizens are the links on the worldwide web that vote for each other. Not unlike our government today, many of these “links” are paid for, and some are of greater value. Ranking high on Google is playing politics. Links and Keywords are the key players in the ranking game. Google also takes into consideration the full content of the page including HTML codes, fonts, subdivisions and the “precise location of each word.”

Links are votes. You must develop a link strategy. Google likes linking things together. Create a rich network of links with distinct quality content. Your website must have quality links going out and coming in. Quality is the key word. Links from reputable pages (which ironically includes .gov pages) are given more weight than links on “link farm” pages. Linking to a “link farm” is one of the worst things you can do and can potentially get your deported off the web. The better the links, the better your ranking. Google will factor in your page content and the content of the pages you link to. Do your research. Google has a free page rank tool on their toolbar. Use it to find out the page ranking and visit the site.

Google also gives more weight to one-way links that lead to your site, and less weight to reciprocal links. How do you get these? Buy them. List yourself in a reputable directory listing. Make sure you are listed in the Open Directory Project (DMOZ.org). If you can’t buy links, write good content. Give someone a reason to link to your site. Again, the keyword is Quality. Submitting articles and press releases are also strategies in the linking game.

Keywords are your platform. They are what you stand for. Words count. Graphics don’t. Make sure your words are not in graphic form and make sure you have relevant titles under your graphics. Start with your title tag. Put everything you stand for in ten words or less. Make your URLs short and keyword specific. Brand yourself. If you type in soda, Mountain Dew will not show up on the first page. If you type in Mountain Dew, it will be on the first page. Brand yourself so users know what they are searching for. Do not put the same words in every heading and every tag. Be descriptive. Sell yourself. There are multitudes of free keyword rank and suggestion tools. Use them as a supplement to your knowledge of your company.

Think of every element in your website as words and pages in a presentation that is going to be up for a vote. Does everything fit? Is it all related? Are you a reputable company with a quality product? Does it sell? Now sell it. Google is waiting for you.

Get Customers through Internet Marketing

It is unlikely that you will gain anything by advertising your internet business to people who do not have access to, or spend very little time on the internet. Marketing has come a long way with the growth of the internet and advertising must be aimed at potential customers. Although offline advertising can pick up a few extra hits from people who have never heard of your internet business, online is the best place to advertise your online business.

Think of your website advertising like a billboard along the side of the road. Regardless of the quality and message on your billboard, it is a waste of money to keep it in place if no one drives down the road. The whole idea behind internet marketing is to put the advertising effort on the well-traveled road and to obtain internet customers, that road is the digital highway. There are many proven methods to succeed at internet marketing and even more ways to fail.

Traffic means sales for an internet business. Online, it is all about the traffic and sending potential customers to your site should be your goal. Whether you do it through pay per click programs, affiliate marketing, search engine marketing, or simply advertising online, you will have to make some effort to encourage more customers to visit your website. Many times a combination of all of the various options will net the best results, but if your budget is limited, you will have to determine which one is right for you.

Successful methods of internet marketing include the design of your website. It may be able to capture information such as an email address of visitors. It is the equivalent of a printed brochure or catalog. Offering direct sales of merchandise is often the goal and fully explaining to visitors what they are paying for so that they can make a decision.

Search engine marketing is enhancing your site to make it attractive to search engines, bearing in mind that search engines only help customers find you; they do not make purchases or recommendations. Your site can be found on search engines by having it optimized for search engines or through pay per click advertising. You pay for certain keywords, and when someone searches for that key work and clicks on your site, you pay for it. Paying for inclusion ads are the same as the yellow pages and you simply buy the space for your name to be included.

Email marketing and banner ads can also provide name recognition but with most banners, you will pay for their inclusion on a site depending on their size. These are similar to traditional print advertising. You are charged for the space without any guarantee of receiving any return on your investment. Online promotion is also becoming popular with blogs and your own online newsletters with links back to your site.

You can gain customers to your website if you use the internet marketing methods that may be suitable for you. Getting customers to your site may help you make sales and ultimately, online success.
